fix for BZDNG-256 / fix for some inconsistencies in edit mode switching 

Cleaned up the keyevent handling and the state machine transitions.
The cleanup fixes BZDNG-256 and enforces the switch to active
multiline mode from inactive multiline mode whenever the text
changes.
